01

What the Green Visa is

The Green Visa, called Green Residence by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, is a renewable five-year residence that lets you live and work in the UAE without a sponsor. The government portal lists three groups who can qualify: skilled workers, freelancers and self-employed individuals, and investors and business partners.

It differs from the standard work visa, where the employer sponsors you and your residence is tied to the employer. With a Green Visa your residence does not depend on one employer.

02

Skilled workers

To qualify as a skilled worker, the ICP guide asks for all of the following:

  • A valid employment contract in the UAE
  • A professional classification in levels 1 to 3 under the occupational classification of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
  • A qualification of at least a bachelor's degree
  • A minimum monthly salary of AED 15,000 or its equivalent in foreign currencies

Notice that the contract is still required. The Green Visa removes the need for a sponsor, but you need to have a job that meets the tests when you apply. The portal's own work visa page notes that the green visa is for skilled employees on self-sponsorship.

03

Freelancers and self-employed

For freelancers and self-employed individuals, the ICP guide sets these conditions:

  • A freelance or self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
  • A qualification of at least a bachelor's degree, a specialised diploma or an equivalent
  • Proof of a stable annual income or financial solvency for the whole period of residence
  • Freelance income in each of the previous two years of at least AED 360,000, or the equivalent in foreign currency

This is a high bar, and it needs a record. If you are new to freelancing, you will not meet the income test yet. Keep invoices, contracts and bank statements from the start.

04

Investors and business partners

Investors and business partners must provide proof of investment in, or contribution to, a business venture in the UAE. They must also obtain the necessary licences and approvals from the relevant authorities. The pages checked do not give a minimum amount for this route, so check the current requirement with ICP before you invest.

05

Family and renewal

Holders can sponsor family members, including a spouse and children, in accordance with the approved requirements. The ICP page does not list those requirements, so check them before you plan a move with family.

The residence is valid for five years and can be renewed. The ICP page mentions specified grace periods after expiry but does not give their length. Do not assume a grace period applies to your situation.

06

How it compares with a sponsored visa

The UAE government portal explains that the validity of a residence visa varies according to its type and the sponsor. Sponsored visas can be issued for 1, 2 or 3 years, while unsponsored visas can run for up to 5 or 10 years. The Green Visa is in the second group.

That has practical effects. A sponsored visa is renewed by your sponsor before it expires, and if the sponsorship ends the visa ends with it. A Green Visa belongs to you. The portal also notes that holders of golden visas and green residency do not need the special permit that other residents must apply for after more than 180 days abroad, which means a long period outside the UAE is less of a risk to your residence.

Even so, a Green Visa is not a permanent right. It lasts five years and must be renewed, so keep meeting the conditions for your category.

07

Green Visa or standard work visa

If you have a job with a sponsor and your pay is below AED 15,000 a month, the standard work visa is the route. If you meet the skilled worker tests, a Green Visa gives you more freedom, because you can live and work without a sponsor.

If you are a freelancer, think about the cost of the permit and the income test. The income threshold is based on the previous two years, so you should plan your business with it in mind.

08

Documents and applications

The sources checked do not give a complete list of documents. They point applicants to the ICP Smart Services platform. In general, expect to need your passport, your qualification certificates and evidence of employment or income, and ask ICP to confirm the full list. Qualifications from other countries are usually checked, so allow time for attestation.

09

Common mistakes

Do not assume a job title proves you are in levels 1 to 3. Check the classification. Do not forget that salary is a monthly figure of AED 15,000, not annual. And do not use an unofficial service that promises approval, because the decision is made by the authorities.
