Norway student visa requirements and application

The Norwegian higher education sector is known for its high academic standard and innovation. It comprises a mixture of public and private universities. According to recent data, there are 24,154 international students enrolled in higher education institutions in Norway. If you are thinking of studying in Norway as an international student, it is important to check if you need a study visa and how to apply for one. 

Students from nations within the European Economic Area can study in Norway for up to 90 days without applying for a student residence permit. However, if their course is longer than 90 days, they will need to apply for a student residence permit. 

Applying for a student visa to Norway involves several steps and requirements. Here is a guide to help you understand the process;

Requirements for a Norwegian student visa

1. To apply for a Norwegian student visa, you need to have an admission from an accredited institution. You must be admitted to a recognised university or college, and you need an official letter of acceptance.
2. You must demonstrate that you can support yourself financially during your studies. You must show proof of sufficient funds (around NOK 123,519 per year ~ 10,511 Euro). You can prove by showing a bank statement with funds in a Norwegian bank account, a confirmation of a scholarship or grant, a financial guarantee from a sponsor.
3. Proof of accommodation in Norway. This could be a rental agreement, a letter from the housing provider.
4. A Proof of health insurance is required. If you are from a country outside the EU/EEA, you must have a private health insurance.
5. A valid passport with at least three months beyond the intended stay in Norway.
6. Pay the application fee (approximately NOK 5,300 as of 2024

Submit the Application

Applications are usually submitted online through the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) website or at the Norwegian embassy/consulate in your home country. After submitting the application online, you may need to schedule an appointment at the nearest Norwegian embassy or consulate to submit your documents and biometrics.

Bring all your original documents and copies to the embassy/consulate.

Provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo).

Wait for Processing

Processing times can vary, so it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your planned travel date. It typically takes a few weeks to several months.

Receive Decision

You will be notified about the decision on your application. If approved, you will receive a residence permit card.
