Ireland allows non-EEA nationals to travel abroad on expired permits during holidays.
The Irish Department of Justice has announced that nationals from non-EEA countries residing in Ireland can use current and expired IRP cards from December 2, 2024, to January 31, 2025, facilitating travel during the Christmas season. Concerned individuals need to apply for the renewal of their IRP cards before they expire.
The Department of Justice stated that “To facilitate Non-EEA Nationals legally resident in the State who are required to renew their current permission and who wish to travel internationally during the Christmas period, the Minister is issuing a Travel Confirmation Notice requesting carriers to allow individuals to travel on their recently expired IRP card where an application to renew their permission was submitted in advance of the expiry date of their IRP card”.
The Travel Confirmation Notice will be valid solely during this period, with new regulations set to be implemented starting in February. Travellers should ensure they carry all relevant documentation, including their expired IRP card and proof of renewal application, as immigration authorities and airlines may request to see these materials. During this time, the Justice Department will continue to process renewal applications and inform airlines and foreign missions about these new provisions.
