EU Citizenship by marriage: Time frame per EU countries
Are you in a relationship with an EU national? If yes, getting married can be your route to acquiring EU citizenship. Citizenship by marriage is considered one of the easiest ways to become a European Union passport holder. Although all EU countries are bound under the same border agreement and some general guidance, citizenship, and residency rights depend on an individual country's citizenship and immigration laws.
As a general rule of the member countries,
- One of the spouses must be a legal citizen of the EU Country
- The non-EU spouse should first obtain residency rights in the EU country where their spouse is a legal citizen, after the residency permit enables the non-EU spouse to live legally in this country.
- The non-EU spouse will be eligible to apply for citizenship after residing in the EU country for a specific period.
It should be noted that being married to an EU citizen doesn't give an automatic citizenship. Citizenship applications must be made separately after several years for some countries.
